Volker Then

Dr. Volker Then has been the Executive Director (and Founding Director) of the Centre for Social Investment of Heidelberg University since 2006. Previously, he worked at the Bertelsmann Foundation, Germany, in his last position as their Director Philanthropy and Foundations. Volker Then served on numerous bodies of international philanthropy organizations, including the Governing Council of the European Foundation Centre, Brussels, the International Committee of the Council on Foundations, Washington D.C., and the Executive Session in Philanthropy des Hauser Centre for Non-profit Organizations, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (1999-2002). He still is a member of the editorial boards of the international „Alliance“ and the German „Stiftung & Sponsoring“ journals.
He is also a board member of several German foundations, e.g. the Manfred-Lautenschläger-Stiftung, and since 2014 has been a member of the German National Advisory Board of the G8-Social Impact Investment Task Force. The research interests of Volker Then currently focus on social impact measurement, social investment and social innovation, as well as philanthropy and its strategy development. He has regularly published on these issues and has international teaching, executive training and advisory experience. This work included working with living donors and foundation executives of many of the large foundations of Europe.
His most recent publication was: Then, Volker et al. (2018): Social Return on Investment Analysis. Measuring the Impact of Social Investment, Palgrave, Basingstoke.
Volker Then holds a Ph.D. from the Free University of Berlin in Social and Economic History. He studied History, Economics and Sociology at the universities of Tübingen, Bielefeld and Oxford (St. Antony’s College).
