The role of socially responsible investments and sustainable finance in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

October 7, 2021
Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia

In 2015, before the approval by the UN General Assembly of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in a joint statement, the IMF and the Multilateral Development Banks declared, “Achieving the SDGs will require moving from trillions to trillions in financial resources. The paradigm shift requires us to have a very broad-spectrum financing framework capable of channelling all kinds of resources and investments, public and private, nationally and globally”. Involving financial markets in achieving these social and environmental goals is considered a relevant element since it allows combining incentives between economic activity and international commitments.

There is a remarkable consensus in assigning COP21 and the Paris Agreement signed at that conference to be the promoter and catalyst of what has been called sustainable finance. This is shaping the evolution of the concept where the weight of the environmental pillar and specifically the fight against climate change is apparent, so it is necessary to generate an environment for discussion in which to redirect the concept of sustainability again towards its triple aspect, economic, social and of course environmental.

The purpose of this conference is to debate these issues at the hands of the three main Spanish forums and present two projects aimed at training and reflecting on these issues. The first of them is a free course offered by the UNED that aims to increase the financial education of European citizens about the transformative power of sustainable finance and responsible and impactful investments in achieving Sustainable Development. The course is online and is part of the Erasmus + project From ESG integration to impact investment, co-financed by the EU. UNED participates together with the University of Linchestein and the Universities of La Sapienza and Unitelma in Rome.

The second project is the particular issue that Diecisiete magazine has dedicated to the contribution of sustainable finance to the SDGs. The number has eight articles, two reviews, and six notes written by academics and professionals who work to promote and develop sustainable finance and responsible investment and impact. Seventeen magazines have the vocation to contribute, from science, research and the dissemination of knowledge, to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; It is co-published by Acción contra el Hambre-ACH and the Center for Innovation in technology for Human Development of the Polytechnic University of Madrid- itdUPM.
